Sutton-Vane, A.M. (October 2000) Report on the conservation and display of a dance crest from New Britain at the Horniman Museum, London (in support of final year placement, BSc (Hons) Conservation and Restoration); London Guildhall University
Summary: With a reputation for excellence, I was delighted to be offered a placement in The Horniman Museum’s Collections, Conservation and Care section, and I still remain grateful to Louise Bacon (Head of Conservation) and to Jeremy Uden, conservator, for their support and huge patience in mentoring me. I was privileged to work on a Uvol dance crest – one of 75 which had been brought back from New Britain by the Dutch collector, Loed van Bussel in 1987. 11 of these crests were sold to The Musee des Arts d’Afrique et d’Oceanie in Paris; 9 to the Linden-Museum in Stuttgart, 6 to the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter (where some are on display in their Pacific gallery) and the remaining crests were sold to private collectors. The Horniman Museum acquired 8 crests from an art dealer in 1997. These crests are rare, fragile and transient – few survive as they are traditionally thrown into a river at the end of the dance ceremony or Sing Sing, a ceremony which only happens once every 25 years.
Sutton-Vane, A.M. (March 2001) A draft report on the conservation of an early 19th century polychromed carved wood figure of St Tobias (in support of final year project, BSc (Hons) Conservation and Restoration); London Guildhall University
Summary: The report covers early research and testing prior to conservation. The provenance of this little carving of St Tobias is interesting. Tests on the materials used indicated he originated from Northern Europe or Spain; supporting this, Alexandra Kosinova, then sculpture conservator at the Victoria and Albert Museum suggested that the presence of glass eyes indicated that he may be Spanish. He was given to my parents as a wedding present in 1950 by the actress Muriel Martin Harvey, and having recently researched her background this strengthens the theory of a Spanish connection. My paternal grandfather was a playwright – Vane Sutton-Vane and my paternal grandmother an actress – Jean Stirling; so it seems the statue had strong thespian connections. Muriel Martin Harvey’s mother was also an actress called Angelita Helena Maria de Silva Ferro, who in turn was the daughter of a Chilean Consul – Don Ramon de Silva Ferro.
Sutton-Vane, A.M. (May 2001) W.G. Rogers and the restoration of the great house carvings: did he help or hinder their survival? BSc (Hons) Restoration and Conservation final dissertation: London Guildhall University
Summary: W.G. Rogers was a flamboyant Victorian carver, voracious dealer and collector of antiquities and self-publicist. He also, however, devoted much of his life to surveying, documenting and in some cases restoring the rapidly disintegrating and forgotten works of the great carver, Grinling Gibbons. With the birth of modern conservation techniques much of this experimental work is now frowned upon – but should this be the case? In researching this paper I was especially grateful to The Tankerdale Workshop for their contemporary conservation reports; as well as to David Esterly and David Luard of Luard Conservation for their comments; to Joyce Stephenson, descendent of Rogers, who holds family photographs and papers.

Summary: this article examined the phenomenon of mobile museums and outreach work. I was interviewed in my role as Curator of the Historic Collections of Devon & Cornwall Police and manager of the Driving Heritage project which aimed to open up the stored collections through innovative employment of a bespoke outreach van and “pop-up museum”.

Summary: I was interviewed for this article which questions the role of police museums and their perceived “independence” when they may be funded by a police force. What can such museums say about the challenges of modern policing?

Sutton-Vane, A.M. (2011) Tying the knot: the material culture of the Turkish hand-knotted carpet in England

Summary: Using medieval port records, paintings, court inventories and correspondence I pieced together the life-cycles of early Turkish carpets in England – when they first arrived and why – and examined whether they were worthy of their reputation as priceless and rare objects of desire, a reputation that has travelled with them through time as part of the carpet’s “mythology”. They were and are complex items – woven into folklore, religion, art, commerce, industrialisation, design and have acquired deep semiotic attributes around class, knowledge, culture and “taste”. The causes of the Turkish carpet’s fall from grace have also been examined and their history has been brought up to date by looking at the carpet industry in Turkey today, as well as taking a “snapshot” interpretation of Turkish carpets on display in National Trust properties. I would especially like to thank the National Trust’s House Managers at the properties I visited and also the generous time given by Jeremy Pearson – National Trust Curator for the South West.
Sutton-Vane, A.M. (2013) An overview of police collections in the UK: findings of a brief survey carried out during April and May 2013 to support the future development of The Historic Collections of Devon & Cornwall Police
Summary: this survey was never intended to be an in-depth work, but to provide a “snap shot” overview of the current health of police collections and the attitudes of their respective forces. As such, it is not comprehensive and I apologise if any collections have been omitted. The report also provides some thoughts around how these collections can become more relevant to their core communities.
